The Indian U-19 women’s cricket team created history as they won the inaugural edition of the U-19 T20 World Cup in South Africa. The Indian eves defeated their England counterparts to win the final.Skipper Shafali Varma led a young side and scripted history on Sunday in Potchefstroom in South Africa.

Shafali Verma who already has made her debut for the senior women’s national cricket team led the young side in this marquee event. She ended the tournament as the third-highest run-getter in the tournament with 172 runs from seven innings.

In the final, India U-19 won the toss and opted to bowl first. As it turned out, the Indian bowlers skitted the England batters out for just 68 in the 18th over. Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi and Parshavi Chopra took two wickets each to bowl out the opposition. Titas Sahu was the Player Of The Match for her brilliant spell of bowling. She took two for six in her four-over spell.

Seven England batters were dismissed for single-digit scores as Ryana Macdonald Gay top-scored scoring 19 runs in the game. Alexa Stonehouse was the next best scoring 11 off 25 deliveries.

Meanwhile, after India’s World Cup win, skipper Shafali Varma was seen in tears in the post-match presentation.

“Thanks to the staff, the way they have been backing us everyday and telling us that we are here for the cup and because of them we are here. All thanks to them. The players have been backing me a lot. Thanks to BCCI for giving me this beautiful team and really happy for winning the cup. She (Shweta Sehrawat) has been excellent and has followed all the plans from the staff. Not just her, Archana, Soumya and I can’t really take the names but they all have been incredible. No, definitely not (when asked if this is the only tournament she’s gonna pick up this season in South Africa)” said an emotional Indian skipper in the post-match interaction.

England skipper Grace Scrivens was awarded the Player Of The Series award as she scored 297 runs in 7 matches in this World Cup averaging 41.86.

With the Women’s IPL coming up soon, this Indian U-19 brings them on the map of women’s cricket very firmly. The Indian eves lost just one game in this campaign which was against their Australian counterparts.
