Rohit Sharma’s India National Cricket Team hammered Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka National Cricket Team by 317 runs in the dead rubber third and final ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15.
India won the toss and elected to bat first in the match. The decision turned out to be an excellent one for the side as they posted a mammoth total of 390/5 on the board.
The modern-day batting great Virat Kohli and the young batting sensation Shubman Gill were the top performers in the innings. Shubman Gill smashed terrific 116 runs off 97 balls, including 14 fours and 2 sixes.
Kohli batted with an excellent strike rate (150.91) and smashed 166* runs off 110 balls, including 13 fours and 8 sixes. He was involved in two 100-plus runs partnerships – with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

Defending the target, the Indian bowling unit demolished the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Mohammed Siraj bagged a four-wicket haul while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami bagged two wickets each to reduce Sri Lanka to 73/9. After being involved in a scary collision with Jeffrey Vandersay, Ashen Bandara didn’t come out to bat and the visitors faced an embarrassing defeat.
It was a great series for us – Rohit Sharma
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma said that he was quite satisfied with the all-round performance of the Indian team in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. He said:
“It was a great series for us. Lots of positives. We bowled well, got wickets when we needed and the batters throughout the series piling on the runs was good to watch.”
Rohit Sharma further showered praise on the right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj for his terrific bowling performance and labelled him as a “rare talent”. He said:
“Good to see how he (Siraj) was bowling and he deserved all those slips. He is a rare talent, the way he has come up over the last few years is good to see. He has come from strength to strength and that’s really good for Indian cricket. We tried all sort of things (to get his fifer) but it didn’t happen, unfortunately. But the four wickets are all his and the fifers will come. He has a few tricks up his sleeves which he is working on and it’s there to see.”
India will next lock horns with New Zealand in a 6-match limited-overs series and Rohit Sharma said that they will get to the drawing board quickly. He stated:
“We’ll get to the drawing board quickly (for the next series) and see how the pitch is, then decide how the combinations will be. They (NZ) are coming off a series win in Pakistan, so it won’t be an easy task at all.”
The New Zealand tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The matches will begin just three days after the white-ball series between India and Sri Lanka.
