The second IND vs NZ T20I will be played on January 29 in Lucknow. New Zealand won the first T20I by 21 runs and are leading the series 1-0. India needs to win the second T20I to keep the series alive. The series continues the preparations for the ODI World Cup later this year.
After beating Sri Lanka at home in the last series, Hardik Pandya has been retained as the captain of the India National Cricket Team for the series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma said that he will think about his T20I future after IPL 2023. All the senior players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj have been rested for this series.

The Kiwis will be led by Mitchell Santner. Dane Cleaver and Ben Lister are a part of the Kiwi T20I squad who did not lay the ODIs. The rest of the side is almost the same. The big three Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Trent Boult are not included in the squad.
India’s loss in the previous T20I exposed a few weaknesses in this young Indian T20I side. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan were both dismissed cheaply. Gill could not translate his ODI form in the few T20Is he has played this year. Their bowling also lacks the experience, especially in the seam attack. The Kiwis, on the other hand, seems to have found their groove in the T20Is.

Arshdeep Singh conceding 20 runs in the final over of the Kiwi innings exposed India’s problems of death bowling once again. The side are dearly missing the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. The decision to keep Yuzvendra Chahal on the bench in the first T20I was hard to understand. He might come back into the playing XI instead of Arshdeep.

The batting needs a bit of rejig as well. Gill and Kishan did not click in the first T20I. Since this is a three-match series and India needs to win the next game, they might look to include Prithvi Shaw in the lineup. The way Rahul Tripathi batted in the first T20I, his place might be in doubt as well. Thus a few changes in the playing XI are expected as they head to Lucknow.
India’s Updated Squad
Hardik Pandya (Captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Prithvi Shaw, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Shivam Mavi, Ishan Kishan, Jitesh Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar

After losing the ODI series, all the Kiwi players played their roles to perfection in the first T20I. Devon Conway kept his form going following his 100 in the third ODI with a fifty in the first T20I. Daryl Mitchell found his form in the T20Is after struggling throughout the ODI series.

Ish Sohi’s comeback to the side proved a great bonus for the side. The spin twins Sodhi and Santner rocked India in Ranchi and will look to do the same in Lucknow. The Kiwis are yet to win a T20I series against India in India and have a great opportunity heading into Lucknow. They have been India’s nemesis in the past and can haunt them again when things are not looking good for the side again.
