The Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team won against the Tom Latham-led New Zealand National Cricket Team in the third ODI of the three-match series by 90 runs at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Tuesday, January 24, to whitewash the visitors.

Losing the toss and batting first, India posted a huge total of 385/9 in 50 overs. However, it was not a satisfactory score for the Men In Blue because at one stage it looked like 400-plus was easily possible, but the Kiwi bowlers shined and didn’t let the Indian middle-order batters play big knocks.

Chasing the target, New Zealand lost Finn Allen in the first over itself for a duck. However, Devon Conway batted exceptionally well alongside Henry Nicholls and had a brilliant 106-run partnership.

Conway, who was struggling with cramps, batted brilliantly and scored 138 runs off 100 balls, including 12 fours and 8 sixes, before getting out. However, other batters failed to register big scores and the Kiwis were bundled out for 295 in 41.2 overs. Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav bagged three wickets each while Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya and Umran Malik shared the remaining 4 wickets.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma said that Team India have consistently done well in the last 6 ODI matches. He said:

“I thought in the last six games we played we did most part rights and that is the key in 50-over games. We were consistent too.”

While talking about changes to the playing XI for the dead rubber ODI, Rohit Sharma said:

“Without Siraj and Shami I knew we wanted to give chances to people on the bench. Wanted to get Chahal and Umran in the mix. We wanted to see how they react under pressure. I don’t think any score is safe here.”

Rohit Sharma further lauded Shardul Thakur for his brilliant 3-wicket haul in the match. He also talked about the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked up combined 5 wickets in the match. Rohit Sharma said:

“Shardul has been doing it for a while. People call him a magician in the squad. Just need to get more games under his belt. The wrist spinners get better with game time.”

India National Cricket Team captain also heaped praise on the Player of the Series, Shubman Gill.

“Gill’s approach is quite similar. As a youngster, coming into the team and have that attitude is great.”

“I’ve been batting well, so it was just about going that extra mile. The pitch was good today. Honestly we don’t talk much about rankings. We discuss mainly about doing the right things on the field,” he added.

Rohit Sharma further said that they are ready for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against “quality team” Australia.

“Australia is a quality team and things won’t be easy for us but I think we are ready for the (BGT) series,” he said.
