The Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team scripted history during the dead rubber third ODI of the three-match series against the Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15, by registering the biggest ever win in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket.

The Punjab-born batter Shubman Gill smashed 116 runs off 97 balls, with 14 fours and 2 sixes. It was his second century for India in 50-over cricket in his 18th innings.

Meanwhile, the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli displayed his class once again and registered his 46th ODI century and overall 74th century in international cricket. He slammed 166* runs off 110 balls, including 13 fours and 8 sixes.

Rohit Sharma (42) and Shreyas Iyer (38) also chipped in with crucial contributions to help India post a mammoth 390/5 on the board in 50 overs.

Defending the target, Mohammed Siraj annihilated Sri Lanka’s batting unit with the new ball and then Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami bagged two wickets each to reduce Sri Lanka to 73/9 in 22 overs and Ashen Bandara was absent hurt, as a result, the visitors were bundled out for the same score, handing out India a monstrous win.

India National Cricket Team hammered Sri Lanka National Cricket Team by 317 runs to achieve the first-ever 300-plus runs triumph in the history of ODI cricket.

The Men In Blue went past New Zealand’s 290 runs victory against Ireland in Aberdeen in July 2008, which came while defending 403. India’s previous biggest victory in 50-over cricket was by 257 runs against Bermuda during the 2007 World Cup in Port of Spain, which came while defending 414.

The third ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the Greenfield International Stadium was only the second ODI held at the venue. The first ODI at the venue was played in November 2018 between India and West Indies. In that match, while batting first, West Indies were bowled out for 104, and India chased it down with nine wickets to spare and 211 balls remaining. That was India’s biggest ODI victory while batting second in terms of balls remaining.
