IPL: Ajit Agarkar set to be Delhi Capitals assistant coach | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar is set to join Delhi Capitals as the assistant coach of the franchise this season. Agarkar is likely to join the Capitals setup once he finishes his commentary commitments during Sri Lanka’s tour of India which will conclude with the pink-ball Test in Bengaluru on March 16.
Former Australia allrounder James Hopes was with the Capitals over the past few seasons.
“Agarkar and Capitals have sealed the deal. The announcement will be made soon. Agarkar will get into the bubble immediately after the Sri Lanka series,” a source told TOI. It is learnt that the domestic players have been asked by franchises to be ready to assemble in Mumbai around March 15. The IPL is likely to start on March 27.
Roping in consultant for T20 WC?
Agarkar’s appointment has come at a time when there is speculation that the Indian team management is playing with the idea of bringing in a pace-bowling consultant in the run-up to the T20 World Cup. Along with Agarkar, Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket Zaheer Khan is considered to be a candidate to be the mentor for Team India.
“Nothing has been decided yet. BCCI has not received any request from the team management yet. Paras Mhambrey is doing a fine job as a bowling coach. He will be around. To get added services of a senior pros who have bowled in high-pressure World Cups could be beneficiary. It’s all an idea. But with both Agarkar and Zaheer working with IPL teams. It’s very unlikely that the franchises will release either of them. One has to be very careful with the conflict-of-interest clause,” the source added.
