With both teams coming off of wins in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying, Sunday’s Mexico vs. Costa Rica match takes on a little more meaning. Costa Rica actually helped Mexico on Thursday by taking down Panama, but now they’ll need to get a win of their own against Mexico in Concacaf World Cup qualifying. Tata Martino’s team may have saved his job with a comeback victory over a 10-man Jamaica team to end a slide, keeping Mexico in third and on track for automatically qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

Here’s are storylines, how you can watch Sunday’s match and more:

How to watch and odds

  • Date: Sunday, Jan. 30 | Time: 6:00 p.m. ET
  • Location: Estadio Azteca — Mexico City, Mexico
  • Live stream: Paramount+
  • Odds: Mexico -340; Draw +330; Costa Rica +950 (via Caesars Sportsbook)

Storylines

Mexico: While Mexico did pull out the victory against Jamaica, their performance was lacking as they went behind to a team playing with 10 men and needed two goals after the 80th minute to pull out the win. The hope is that the emotional factor from the comeback will carry over to kickstarting their campaign, but this isn’t an El Tri side to be feared like in years past. Raul Jimenez could return for this match from a calf injury to add a much needed fluidity to the Mexico attack. After being suspended for yellow card accumulation, Hirving Lozano will also return to face Los Ticos.

Costa Rica: Through Bryan Ruiz all things are possible. The 36-year-old forward is still going strong for the national team as his winner against Panama gave them new life in World Cup qualifying. Ruiz and Joel Campbell are the guys who will be looked for on every attack and to their credit, they are usually available. You know what Costa Rica — who sit fifth in the Concacaf table, two points behind fourth-place Panama — are going to do in every match but their disciplined defense anchored by Kaylor Navas makes them hard to break down when soaking up pressure. Los Ticos will hope to take advantage of lapses in concentration from Mexico to escape with a point.

Prediction

El Tri have a point to prove that they should qualify for the World Cup with ease and the return of Lozano should be enough to see out the win at home. Pick: Mexico 2, Costa Rica 0
