The new coaches for South Africa are anticipated to be introduced: Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter. Conrad most recently served as the head coach of South Africa’s Under-19 team, and Walter will leave his post as the leader of Central Districts in New Zealand.

The two were chosen above Malibongwe Maketa, the current temporary coach, former West Indies director of cricket Richard Pybus, and former national assistant coach Adi Birrel (who applied for the red-ball job only). In order to concentrate on his work in T20 leagues, Lance Klusener, the front-runner for the white-ball position, withdrew his candidacy on Monday.

Following Mark Boucher’s departure last year, Enoch Nkwe, the CSA director of cricket, oversaw the appointments that will result in a split coaching structure for South Africa’s men’s sides.

More than 10 years earlier, South Africa attempted a similar strategy when Gary Kirsten’s assistant Russell Domingo was given control of the T20 team, with Kirsten staying in charge of the Test and ODI teams. Then, six months after Kirsten, Domingo took over as an all-format coach.

Regardless of who is given the white-ball role, play will begin right away regardless of which format Conrad and Walter will be coaching. From January 27, South Africa will compete against England in three World Cup Super League games.

South Africa is still hoping to make it to the World Test Championship final:

The Test coach will have a reduced workload at the international level for the time being, as South Africa still has hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final, despite defeats in their two most recent series in Australia and England, but only has two matches scheduled in the next 11 months – at home to West Indies in March. During the long periods between Tests, the Test coach will manage the first-class system.

South Africa is now mired in mediocrity in both the white-ball and red-ball versions. While the Test team was defeated 2-0 in the three-match Test series in Australia, the Proteas are struggling to qualify for the ODI World Cup in India later this year. They will play England in a three-match ODI series at home from January 27 to February 1. The West Indies will also play two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in South Africa between February 28 and March 28.
