“There Are So Many Kings” – Ajay Jadeja Slams India’s Leadership Setup

Former India National Cricket Team batter Ajay Jadeja has slammed the current leadership setup of the Indian team, saying that he is not able to identify who is running the team at the moment.

Jadeja’s comments have come ahead of the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka, which is set to be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Ajay Jadeja said that there has to be one leader in the team to avoid any confusion among players, which he reckons is not the case in the India National Cricket Team as there are many captains.

He also believes that the BCCI should formally announce the captain and vice-captain for the different formats ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. He said:

“I, at the moment, don’t know who runs this cricket team. See, there has to be one king, one leader, captain or coach or selector or some authority, whoever it is. There are so many kings. What does the Praja (followers) do? Which king do they listen to?”

Recently, Hardik Pandya led India to a 2-1 T20I series win over Sri Lanka in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Also, Hardik has officially replaced KL Rahul as India’s vice-captain of the ODI team. Last year, several players, including Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan and Jasprit Bumrah led India in Rohit’s absence from the team due to different reasons.

The 51-year-old further talked about KL Rahul’s removal from the vice-captaincy role in white-ball cricket and said:

“The poor fellow was leading the Test match team three weeks ago. He was vice-captain last year in the World Cup. The team that has been picked for the One Dayer. He’s not the vice-captain anymore. It must be tough on KL Rahul. What happens to KL Rahul? We’ll have to wait and watch. KL Rahul anyway was batting at four.

“You, as a player, should not go down, in fact, get enhanced. You, as a champion player, are probably more important than leading (the team).”
