The opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill once again provided India with a good start in the match and at the end of the first powerplay they were at 52/0.
Kiwi pacer Blair Tickner broke the opening stand in the 13th over, dismissing captain Rohit. The 35-year-old scored 34 runs off 38 balls, smashing 4 fours and 2 sixes, and batted with a strike rate of 89.47.
The in-form Virat Kohli was unable to play a big knock as he was castled for 8 by Mitchell Santner in the 16th over and the wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was cleaned up by Lockie Ferguson for 5 in the 20th over.
Then, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav stitched together brilliant 65 runs off 53 balls. Although Suryakumar Yadav got dismissed by Daryl Mitchell for 31 in the 29th over, Shubman Gill completed his third ODI ton in the next over off just 87 balls.
The Punjab-born batter kept batting brilliantly and he stood strong at one end. Shubman Gill added 74 runs in 67 balls with Hardik Pandya, who was controversially declared out by the third umpire, 43 runs in 32 balls with Washington Sundar, 10 runs in 10 balls with Shardul Thakur and 43 runs in 16 balls with Kuldeep Yadav.

In the 49th over, Gill hit three consecutive sixes to Lockie Ferguson to bring up his double century. He reached the spectacular milestone off 145 balls, including 19 fours and 8 sixes. He was dismissed by Henry Shipley on the second ball of the 50th over and the young batting sensation slammed amazing 208 runs off 149 balls, including 19 fours and 9 sixes.
Shubman Gill’s stupendous knock combined with decent contributions by Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya helped India post a mammoth total of 349/8 on the board.
Defending the target, Mohammed Siraj once again got the breakthrough for his side in the first powerplay. He dismissed dangerous Devon Conway for 10 in the 6th over.
Opener Finn Allen played an aggressive brand of cricket and was trying to build a big partnership with Henry Nicholls before Rohit Sharma introduced partnership-breaker Shardul Thakur, who went on to dismiss Allen for 40.
After that, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav cleaned up Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell while Mohammed Shami sent back Glenn Phillips. Kiwi captain Tom Latham, who has got an outstanding record against India, was dismissed for 24 by Mohammed Siraj in the 29th over and the Black Caps were reduced to 131/6.
Then came something that India wouldn’t have expected as Michael Bracewell showcased batting brilliance under tremendous pressure and stitched up a remarkable partnership with Mitchell Santner. The duo also exposed India’s inability to bag wickets in the end overs.
The local lad Mohammed Siraj finally broke the terrific 162-run stand between the Kiwi all-rounders by dismissing Mitchell Santner in the 46th over. Santner smashed brilliant 57 runs off 45 balls, including 7 fours and 1 six.
In the end, the one-man-army Michael Bracewell’s valiant effort went in vain as he was cleaned up by Shardul Thakur’s stunning yorker on the second ball of the 50th over after smashing a six on the first ball. Michael Bracewell smashed spectacular 140 runs off 78 balls, including 12 fours and 10 sixes.

Finally, India needed Lord Shardul 🙏
He watched the feet of the batter. Valiant effort from M Bracewell. Yes, we have seen glimpses of what he can do in the recent past.
In these conditions (dew), a good batting unit can chase 350-360.
Matches have to start earlier in the WC

— Silly Point (@FarziCricketer) January 18, 2023
No one talks about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy when India wins, but the moment these hypocrites see India in a losing position, they start tweeting about captaincy.

Cracking game.. if you thought ODIs were dead and buried..
— Sarah Waris (@swaris16) January 18, 2023
If I was captain, I would much rather stab myself with stumps than give the ball to Shardul Thakur in a pressure situation.#IndvNZ #CricketTwitter

Shami today
First 7 overs, 1-29
Next 3 overs, 0-40Not the first time that he has been expensive at the death. In fact, his ER bowling in the last 15 overs in an ODI is 7.51 now (247.4 overs bowled). And out of his 156 ODI wickets, 83 have come in the last 15 (46 in last 5).
